Lexus Nuaero: Self-Absorbed Car Designers Rejoice

Jon Rådbrink’s Lexus Nuaero concept

Ah, car design students, they’re pretentiousness embodied. Aside from actors, there really is no more self-absorbed group. Young Swedish designer, Jon Rådbrink, presented this concept at the Royal College of Art graduation show in London last month. This really is function sacrificed at the altar of faux-futurist form.

It’s called the Lexus Nuaero, and instead of a transmission, it has individual motors located at each wheel. That design also allows for open, catamaran underbody, since there’s no driveshaft or trans under there. There’s also no brake or gas pedal, all the controls are in an airplane style steering wheel. To apply the brakes, you push the wheel away from you. That’s actually all well and good, new design is interesting and shakes things up, what bothers me is the designers idea of what defines quality.

See, the Nuaero is 15 and a half feet long, 6 and a half feet wide, 4 feet high, with a 11 foot wheelbase…yet it weighs 1700 pounds, about the same as a Smart Fortwo. It seems like a stiff wind would loft this car up like a kite.

“I believe that this design paradox of low weight and large presence could be the way we’ll define premium in the future,” the designer says.

Really? Because that’s actually how most human beings intuitively define “low quality”, the exact opposite of premium. Low weight + large presence = no substance. It’s just a big hollow plastic form. But then again, maybe I was a little harsh, what do you think?

Here’s the pics and a video:

Should All Cars Have Gas Mileage Displays?

Every car has a MPH Display. This is just logical thinking. One of the really cool things about the Toyota Prius, is that it has a Gas Mileage Display.

A discussion has broken out over on Ecomodder discussing this very point. It’s my belief that iin the future all cars will have this dataset built in by government standard and when cars fall below a certain fuel mileage that they will no longer be fit for the road.

gas pumps

This is my personal take on the issue.

What do you think?

New Mobil Zero-Weight Motor Oil Touts a 2% Fuel Savings for Engines

It seems that science, engineers and consumers in general are all looking for the same things these days - fuel savings. While many are still unwilling to pry their paws from the peddle of their SUV or sporty coupe (..guilty), it does not mean we are not looking for other advantages that lead us toward better fuel economy. Well, Mobil motor oil has just provided us with another option that is touted to achieve a potential 2% increase in fuel efficiency.

Mobil’s zero-weight Advanced Fuel Economy oil is positioned to improve lubrication and ease the labors of the engine’s fuel pump enough that an average automobile could save a mind boggling $400 over the 150,000 lifetime of the vehicle. They say that their 0w-20 and 0w-30 oils can be used in place of the 5w-20 and 5w-30 oils that the manufacturer calls for with no negative side effects.

Here is what Mobil has to say about their new oil:

Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy is engineered to deliver outstanding engine protection and to offer improved fuel economy in vehicles where SAE 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil is recommended.  This low friction, fully synthetic formulation increases engine efficiency and offers outstanding fuel economy.  Over the life of your vehicle, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy can save over $400 in fuel costs.

If you just bought that new Mustang or Civic you have been dreaming of and you are thinking of mounting up a bit more rumble to your exhaust system you might want to think twice about it if you live in Massachusetts.
