Random: The Delicious Daewoo Watermelon Car

I don’t care how silly everyone else thinks this car is, I love it. It’s a watermelon for pete’s sake, the most delicious of all the very large fruits. The paint job is actually really well done, it’s even has the black trim inside against the watermelon red interior. Perfect.

Here are the rest of the pictures:

Eddie Murphy Spotted Facing The Wrong Direction In California Traffic

In Culver City, California, the giant likeness of Eddie Murphy was photographed trailing behind a pick-up truck on the Sepevulda Pass. Some speculate it’s a marketing move from Murphy, but I think he’s got enough sense to know it’d take more than a paper mâché bust to undo the damage caused by Meet Dave and Norbit. Unfortunately, no details were provided with the picture beyond its location when it was taken, and since Eddie Murphy is less relevant to mainstream pop culture than MST3k [sadly, but I'm rooting for you anyway, Cinematic Titanic!], I really don’t have anything else to give you.

So hit the jump, and enjoy the awesome head

The 2009 Honda Fit and the New American Way

Can I admit I want a Honda Fit and not be a RideLust outcast?

Admittedly, there’s something bizarre in my brain. A Liberty Bell shaped gland that fuels my thirst for bigness, speed, and loud noises. That’s the part of me saying “No, forget the Fit, its queer. You want horsepower and smoke from spinning wheels, you want danger and difficult to pronounce Italian cars with long hoods”, and its true, I do; I think? But there is something about the Honda Fit. It’s got charm.

2009 will be the first year Americans have the privilege of driving the second generation Honda Fit. Its perfect timing too because oil is up over $140 a barrel and I’m sick of swallowing gas every time I try to siphon it out of my neighbors cars. It’s disgusting.

We’re a bit behind the times though; this 2nd gen version was released in Japan back in late 2007, and was even named Japan’s Car of the Year in 2008 (just like the first generation was in 2002), beating out the new Impreza and Infiniti G37, among others. That’s some heavy competition.

Honda can win those awards because they’re constantly trying to improve. They’ve addressed just about every issue the first model had. More glass all around for better visibility, better quality interior trim and seats, a stretched out wheelbase for better legroom. And it’s more than just styling. Underneath, there’s a completely reengineered chassis, and an improvement in overall structural rigidity by 164 percent, making for a really solid feel and the added benefit of making the ride a lot less harsh than its predecessor’s. They even upgraded the engine. All that plus 34 mpg, and it starts out at around $14,000. Now you see the appeal.

That’s $14,000 for a stripped down base model. A well equipped model will run you a little more, and a super cool Sport model (with 16 inch alloys, paddle shifters, and a couple rad gadgets) can get you up past 17k if you really try.

Generally, I like Corvettes and Mangustas and zero to 60 in less than 5 seconds. But I also like to zip around like a nimble little auto ninja and not pay 100 dollars to fill up my tank. And I’m not the only one with shifting attitudes.

It’s a changing social landscape out there. Look at video games: instead of the high level technology and menacing façade of the Playstation 3, we’re cartoon bowling on the Nintendo Wii.

Did you know they use Playstation 3 chips in supercomputers? It’s true. Plus it was a Blu-Ray player.  And still, the Wii outsold the PS3 by almost 6 million units.

What’s this have to do with the Honda Fit?

It’s the same principle: it’s inexpensive, well made, and fun. I have a feeling Honda is going to sell more than the 70,000 Fit’s they have on hand in the US. Fun is fun, it’s undeniable.

New Mobil Zero-Weight Motor Oil Touts a 2% Fuel Savings for Engines

It seems that science, engineers and consumers in general are all looking for the same things these days - fuel savings. While many are still unwilling to pry their paws from the peddle of their SUV or sporty coupe (..guilty), it does not mean we are not looking for other advantages that lead us toward better fuel economy. Well, Mobil motor oil has just provided us with another option that is touted to achieve a potential 2% increase in fuel efficiency.

Mobil’s zero-weight Advanced Fuel Economy oil is positioned to improve lubrication and ease the labors of the engine’s fuel pump enough that an average automobile could save a mind boggling $400 over the 150,000 lifetime of the vehicle. They say that their 0w-20 and 0w-30 oils can be used in place of the 5w-20 and 5w-30 oils that the manufacturer calls for with no negative side effects.

Here is what Mobil has to say about their new oil:

Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy is engineered to deliver outstanding engine protection and to offer improved fuel economy in vehicles where SAE 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil is recommended.  This low friction, fully synthetic formulation increases engine efficiency and offers outstanding fuel economy.  Over the life of your vehicle, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy can save over $400 in fuel costs.

The Road Less Traveled is growing in appeal with Slow Road Drivers

Route 66In a country embroiled with fast cars, fast food, microwave-ovens  and express ways, there is a growing number of people who are looking to step back and slow down. While we often brag about how making the trip from South Carolina to West Virginia was accomplished in 9 hours there are certain times where the adventure should be in the travel and the scenes along the way and not about just the speed with which we reached our destination. The slow road as it is called is where some bring the humanity back into the travel and remove themselves from the impersonal blur that is the Fast Food Nation.

The are a number of scenic routes of Historic significance here in the United States and many of them are finding a resurgence in popularity. Route 66 is one of The premiere Historic highways that has finally been seeing a bit of a revival. Not only is there federal money coming in to maintain and preserve the old highway, but even some of the old motels have been restored and reopened along the route.

A BMW 1-Series Hatchback in the Dakar Rally?

BMW 1-Series Rally Car

Take a look at a rally car with a touch of refinement implicated by its BMW 1-Series Hatchback shell. Ofcourse all that refinement will be caked over by dirt, dust and sand after they take the all-wheel drive “Trio”, as it it is called, through the rigors of the 2008 Dakar Rally in France. With the large tires and visible roll cage support this may not be an example of a BMW you would want to see rolling up behind you on a windy side road.

BMW 1-Series Rally Car

Besides the 1-Series shell this rugged rally car has only one other similarity with any BMW line and that is in the 6-cylinder 3.0 liter turbo-diesel engine. While the reported horsepower being delivered from the BMW diesel is 265 the torque for the similar baseline engine in the BMW X5 puts out a pleasing 428 ft.lb. Once the “Trio” is in the Dakar Rally very little of the BMW facade will be on the minds of the driver and navigator. Some samples of their exchanges will more resemble, “Left turn” “Right turn” “Go straight” “Crap!” In the mean time, up until the rally, there is yet another BMW on four-wheels to bring a little more focus on the BMW 1-Series.

Go to AutoBlog.com to check out the other pictures of the “Trio” rally car.
