GM Reportedly Kills the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST!

pontiac_g8_st_red.jpg
Pickuptruck.com is reporting that GM has quietly decided to kill plans for the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST.

GM unveiled the Pontiac G8 ST last year at the New York Auto show. The unibody pickup version of the G8 sedan was expected to be V8 powered, feature a 74-inch cargo bed and be able to tow up to 3,500 pounds. The vehicle immediately recalled previous vehicles like the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero.

Last month, Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC stated that GM was going to pare down the number of Pontiac vehicles and that the G8 ST was under review to see if it made sense.

The G8 ST was expected to be launched as a 2010 model with prices starting in the low $30,000's. It was also rumored that GM was going to introduce a V6 version of the vehicle with the same direct-injection V6 as the upcoming Camaro.

Should we be sad?

I don’t care how silly everyone else thinks this car is, I love it. It’s a watermelon for pete’s sake, the most delicious of all the very large fruits. The paint job is actually really well done, it’s even has the black trim inside against the watermelon red interior. Perfect.

2008 Detroit Auto Show: GM Brings Style and Stars to Auto Show Runway

GM brought out the heavy star power to dress their runway Style show at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. While the performers are used to getting all the attention they were merely poised as accessories, highly paid, well dressed accessories to the new designs for 2008 coming down the GM runway.

Those in attendance for the GM Style runway show were Mary J. Blige, Kid Rock, Maroon 5, Jeff Gordon, Adrian Brody and the Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick (who was not hurting for Style points himself).

The Auto Industry has been using star power for decades to draw the buyers eyes to their new designs, but GM’s Style show raises the bar beyond flashy unveiling’s and smokey entrances. Below are two galleries of some of what you might have seen. (more…)

NYSE Puts GM Stock Trading On Hold While Awaiting 3Q Announcement [Earnings]

General Motors has halted trading in advance of the big third-quarter announcement we've been waiting for. This isn't catastrophic news, but it underlines the fact that the announcement (which was supposed to made a few minutes ago) is going to be bad. Really bad. It's raining in Detroit right now and CNBC's Phil LeBeau is sitting on the phone waiting for his producer to give him the numbers so that he can report them to the world. It's a rather fitting scene. Expect a quick update as soon as we hear the news.

Hummer Looking to Expand their Market Appeal in Coming Years

GM is planning an expansion of the Hummer brand and looks to take on the competition on the road and off.

Hummer H3T Concept, 2003

In 2003 Hummer developed a concept vehicle called the H3T. It was a pickup truck based off the H2 model. Working off the designs of that concept GM will be branching out the Hummer line-up to compete in untapped markets.

The first changes to come for Hummer will be in 2008 and with the H3 and H2 models. The H3 will be adding a new engine package. It will be a 300-hp 5.3 liter V8 that is sure to add some muscle behind what is currently the smallest of the Hummer brand. The H2 will be finding itself on the receiving end of some interior refinements.

Hummer H3T Concept, 2003In 2009 the Hummer lineup will expand to include the H4 and the new H3 Pickup. The H4 will be marketed to challenge the off-road dominance of the Jeep Wrangler brand. The Wrangler has a loyal following and a resurgence in approval with their recent redesign. However questions and complaints about the weak power-plant and transmission that motivate the Wrangler through the trails may open the door for a well-appointed competitor. The H3 pickup will be a true first Hummer. It will expand on the appeal of the H3 SUT while possibly opening up a new niche in the pick-up market.

In 2010 the H2 will receive a complete redesign that will be sure to turn heads. Other sources have also intimated that some exploration in diesel engines for the Hummer line may also be introduced in the coming years, but like everything else in this business… until it reaches the market place it is all speculation.

McCain in favor of national CO2 limits

U.S. Presidential hopeful John McCain says he opposes the notion that individual states should be able to set their own carbon dioxide emissions regulations. Still, it sounds as if automakers could be in for a shocker if the Republican were to be elected, as he says, "My goal would be to see a federal standard that every state could embrace. I think we can achieve a status where that would go away." So, it sounds as if the target for CO2 emissions could be set even lower than currently planned. McCain likely mimics the thoughts of the Detroit 3 as he says, "It's going to be hard, it's going to be long and it's going to be tough."

McCain appears to see the future of the American auto market as one made up of small, fuel efficient cars. His latest stop was at GM's Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant where the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 are built, a plant McCain sees as key to GM's successes. Still, the major players in the industry will be on their own, as McCain has no intention to offer any sort of bailout to any of the Detroit 3.

Tough Times: GM ends endorsement deal with Tiger Woods

Celebrity endorsements are a powerful thing. For instance, when you see someone wearing a set of fly Nike high tops, Michael Jordan invariably comes to mind. And when you see a Buick Rendezvous roll by, no doubt an image of Tiger Woods is conjured. Alright, so maybe the greatest golfer ever got the short end of that 9 iron, but it doesn't matter much anymore as General Motors has announced that its ending Buick's nine-year endorsement deal with Tiger Woods effective December 31, 2008. GM says the decision to separate was amicable and mutual (they always say that). For his part, Tiger has a second cub on the way and GM, well... GM would rather keep its assembly plants open a few extra days than pay an athlete to stand next to a Buick Lacrosse. Smart choice, we'd say. And now, when Congress asks Rick Wagoner for examples of how GM is sacrificing during these tough economic times, he can tell them, "We fired Tiger Woods!". You check out GM's official Dear John letter to Tiger after the jump.
